When you are deeply in love with yourself
I know, I know, some are Nolan-struck after The Odyssey fireworks. And Christopher did bring to Homer’s epic the grandeur it required, had us brush up on Greek myths, and turned us against each other on the star cast and Circe. While Odysseus, or Ulysses if that’s what you call him, navigated the Mediterranean Sea, even as an empty throne and Penelope waited back home in Ithaca, the film, like the legend, paid homage to homecomings, happy endings, fairy tales.
As heroes go, he got to do it all – an epic Trojan war, hearing the sirens sing without paying the price, a loving family – but what about other Greek heroes, the ones less sung about? Medea, Oedipus, Achilles, Antigone, Lysistrata…Who among them should Nolan turn to next?
