True reform requires equal accountability

Dowry is one of the most damaging social evils in India. It reduces marriage to a financial transaction, burdens families, commodifies daughters, and fuels greed. There can be no justification for this practice. No one should demand dowry, and no one should offer it.

Yet, if we genuinely want to eradicate dowry, we must acknowledge an uncomfortable truth: every dowry transaction has two participants. While the law rightly penalizes those who demand and accept dowry, meaningful reform requires accountability for those who willingly offer it as well.

Stop saving for your daughter’s dowry; start investing in her destiny. Educate her, equip her with skills, make her financially independent, and give her the confidence to build her own future. True empowerment lies not in what parents can give at marriage, but in what a daughter can achieve on her own.

For decades, anti-dowry efforts have focused largely on one side of the transaction. However, when families agree to pay dowry to secure a marriage alliance, they inadvertently sustain the very system they later criticize. Equal accountability would send a strong message that marriage is not a marketplace and that daughters are not liabilities to be negotiated away.

While genuine victims of dowry harassment deserve full protection and justice, false allegations can destroy innocent lives, damage reputations, disrupt careers, and drag elderly parents into prolonged legal battles. Justice must protect the innocent while punishing the guilty.

The long-term solution lies not in creating more laws but in changing societal attitudes. Parents must stop viewing daughters as liabilities and sons as investments. Instead, we must raise self-reliant women and responsible men who enter marriage as equal partners, not as parties to a financial bargain.

India will defeat the dowry system only when we reject the mindset that sustains it. A daughter should inherit opportunities, education, and confidence not dowry. A son should seek a life partner, not financial gain. Only then can marriage truly be based on dignity, respect, and equality.
