MEERUT: A 38-year-old sweet shop owner from Greater Noida was allegedly beaten, given electric shocks and forced to consume poison after he was called to meet a woman with whom he was in a relationship, in what police are probing as a suspected honour killing in Bulandshahr’s BB Nagar area. Two accused, including the woman and her husband, were arrested, while police booked five named persons and several unidentified accused for murder, rioting and causing hurt by poison.Avdhesh Kumar, a resident of Rishalu village in Chhatari area, ran a sweet shop in Surajpur area of Greater Noida. His brother Krishna Kumar told police that Avdhesh left home on June 14 after receiving repeated calls from the woman, identified as Manju, with whom he was allegedly in a relationship for nearly two years. The family later received information that he was being assaulted at her house.Rahul Dhangar, a relative of Avdhesh, said, “Avdhesh was married and father of three children. He ran a sweet shop in Surajpur area of Greater Noida, where he came in contact with Kishan Kumar from BB Nagar and fell in love with his wife Manju. Both were in a relationship for the past two years.” He added, “Avdhesh had come to the village from Greater Noida on June 13, and the next day Manju called him several times to come to her house. Later, we were informed that he had been killed.”The family alleged that Manju’s husband Kishan Kumar, his brothers and other associates confined Avdhesh at their house, assaulted him through the night, gave him electric shocks and forced him to consume a poisonous substance. He was later taken in critical condition to a community health centre, where he died during treatment.Police registered a case under BNS sections 103 (murder), 191 (rioting) and 123 (causing hurt by means of poison), against Manju, Kishan Kumar, his brothers Jeetu and Gulshan, Rekha Devi and several unidentified persons. Officials said the post-mortem report and forensic evidence would help establish the exact cause of death and whether poisoning, electrocution or assault led to his death.Investigators said they were examining call records, the sequence of phone calls made to Avdhesh before he left home, statements of family members and witnesses, and whether the accused had planned the attack in advance. Police said more arrests were likely after the role of other named and unidentified accused was verified.Circle officer Ramkaran Singh said Manju and Kishan Kumar had been arrested and police were searching for the remaining accused. “Police are investigating all aspects of the case, including allegations of torture and honour killing linked to the couple’s relationship,” he said.
