Mahua moves privilege notice against 3 Nadia officials over guest house eviction

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra has moved a privilege notice before Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla against three senior Nadia district officials, alleging a breach of parliamentary protocol and “contemptuous conduct” after she was asked to vacate Nadia Circuit House late on Aug 14.In the notice filed under Rule 222 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in Lok Sabha on Aug 16, the Krishnanagar MP sought action against the Nadia district magistrate, additional district magistrate and Nazareth deputy collector.Moitra said she had informed Birla on Aug 13 about her visit to Krishnanagar after the monsoon session and sought protection against harassment. She reached the circuit house around 6.15pm on Aug 14 and was allotted her usual room, where tea and dinner were served. She claimed that at 9.47pm, the additional district magistrate called asking her to vacate the premises, allegedly saying instructions came from “the top”. At 10.52pm, a WhatsApp message from the Nazareth deputy collector delivered an Aug 12 order citing maintenance and cleaning work.Questioning the order, Moitra said several govt officials were occupying rooms, and staff told her no cleaning was underway. She also alleged a crowd gathered outside around 11pm and shouted slogans, posing a security threat opposite the residences of the district magistrate and superintendent of police.Citing the home ministry’s Order of Precedence, Moitra said MPs are placed at number 21 and entitled to circuit house stay. She urged Birla to refer the matter to the privileges committee and sought an interim advisory to the Bengal chief secretary directing the Nadia administration to extend all protocols due to MPs.
