Himalayas can no longer bear the brunt of climate change
Nepal has once again suffered a massive disaster. In recent years, continuous earthquakes have already inflicted heavy losses of life and property. Now, this new tragedy—unfolding as a devastating flash flood—has left the entire nation deeply distressed.
Among the speculations surrounding the event, one points to a massive ice block measuring roughly 2,000 square feet that broke off from a height of 17,000 feet in Tibet and crashed down. Its impact was so intense that it felt like a powerful explosive strike.
The harsh truth is that this is the result of changing ecological dynamics in the Himalayas, primarily driven by global warming and climate change. It is believed that an earthquake around 8:15 am triggered the detachment. However, typical earthquakes do not cause ice blocks to break away so easily, as seen in past events. The direct cause is likely an avalanche or the structural instability of glaciers caused by rising global temperatures.
This catastrophe ravaged a wide swath of Nepal. Around 18 small and large hydroelectric projects were damaged. Sweeping through Rasuwa, the deluge turned into severe floods across the Nuwakot, Bhote Koshi, and Trishuli rivers. The Trishuli Hydropower Plant and surrounding infrastructure—including temples and schools—were swept away.
Within 25 to 30 minutes, panic ensued as the entire landscape transformed. Along with local citizens, over 400 Kailash Mansarovar pilgrims, including 133 Indians, went missing, alongside 265 missing individuals from China.
Roughly 22 concrete bridges and 42 kilometres of roads were wiped out. Several settlements, homes and the immigration centre near the Nepal-Tibet border were destroyed in an instant.
While the full scale of the devastation and exact technical causes will become clearer with time, this event raises alarming questions about the vulnerability of the Himalayas and the safety of its inhabitants. Mountain settlements and infrastructure are often built along riverbanks; when these rivers swell, these communities bear the initial brunt.
The geographical reality of the Himalayas means that a disaster occurring at any single peak or location never remains localised. It sweeps across human settlements, livelihoods, and infrastructure downstream. Past tragedies—whether Kedarnath, Dharchula, Dharasu, or the recent crisis in Sikkim—demonstrate this identical pattern of destruction.
Disturbances in the Himalayas cannot be viewed merely as isolated, local incidents. An iceberg detachment in Tibet directly impacts and devastates Nepal and India. Borders belong to nations; nature knows no boundaries. Over 2 billion people benefit directly from the Himalayas, meaning they are equally vulnerable to their disruptions. This crisis threatens the broader ecosystem. Tibet is known for prioritising green cover and environmental policies; that such an event originated there proves no region is completely immune to the fallout of global warming.
While infrastructure planning and leadership in Himalayan states often face scrutiny—and validly so—they are not the sole factors. The fundamental driver is global warming, the brunt of which is borne first by the Himalayas. Mountain communities now dread the monsoon, fearing sudden destruction of their homes, farmlands and livelihoods. Rural villages consistently suffer the most.
Rising ocean temperatures alter air pressure and shift monsoon patterns, triggering severe droughts in some places and cloudbursts or flash floods in others. The tragedy in Nepal shares clear parallels with the 2013 Kedarnath disaster, where glacial melt and lake breaches caused massive flooding. A satellite report from the University of Calgary similarly attributes this event to the detachment of an ice block in Tibet.
The ultimate root causes remain indiscriminate energy consumption and excessive carbon emissions. Himalayan inhabitants bear little to no responsibility for global warming; true accountability lies with industrialised, developed nations. While Europe has begun experiencing severe climate disruptions in recent years, the Himalayan belt remains among the most acutely impacted regions.
Himalayan nations must address this with utmost urgency. Upgrading administrative status, boosting local economies, and constructing physical infrastructure are insufficient on their own; human activity must align harmoniously with ecology. The event in Tibet impacted Nepal and posed flood threats downstream to the Kosi River basin in India, proving global interconnectedness.
The immediate trigger for frequent flash floods is that monsoon systems and atmospheric pressures are breaching natural limits. For human survival, society’s perception and treatment of the Himalayas must fundamentally change. Preserving the ecological vitality of the Himalayas is no longer optional—it is a necessity.
