“How boring, isn’t it? There’ve been no surprises.” That Spain and France head into one semi-final, and England and Argentina take on each other, confirms the accuracy of Fifa rankings: the top four teams on that list are the four still competing for a place in the final and for the World Cup.

It seems predictable and, to some, even dull. That should set alarm bells ringing. It’s often argued that the grim final of the 1994 World Cup in US – blunt football, a goalless draw and a title decided by a miss rather than a moment of brilliance in the penalty shootout – slowed the growth of the sport in the country.
