Berhampur: A 57-year-old high school teacher was arrested on Saturday for allegedly raping his daughter multiple times over the last three years, the abuse continuing even after her marriage. Unable to take the abuse anymore, the 23-year-old set herself on fire at her in-laws’ house and is now battling for life with 75% burns at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.The matter came to light when the woman named her father and two others to the police, said additional SP (Berhampur) Alok Jena. Police did not disclose the identity of the other two.Police said the woman, who has a PG in Botany, had accused her father of sexual abuse and harassment in a social media post around six months after her marriage in April last year. The allegations allegedly triggered marital discord and eventually led to her separation from her husband, who was employed with a private company in Bhubaneswar.According to the police, the woman returned to her in-laws’ house in Ganjam district on Thursday morning. She allegedly locked herself on the rooftop and attempted self-immolation. Her brother-in-law rescued her and rushed her to MKCG.During investigation, police seized the mobile phones of both the accused and the survivor. Investigators allegedly found that the accused had taken Rs 10 lakh from the woman’s father-in-law before marriage. When the woman asked him to return the money, he allegedly blackmailed her using objectionable photographs, driving her to attempt suicide, police said.Jena said investigation revealed that the accused had sexually abused his daughter repeatedly over a prolonged period. “The accused was arrested after a medical examination. A scientific team visited the spot and collected physical and material evidence,” he said. Further investigation is underway.
