NEW DELHI: India will take decisions in the best interests of its people and will continue to follow an independent foreign policy, minister of state for external affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh said while responding to a question on Trump’s Russian sanctions law and its possible impact on India.“The people of India are the top priority for our government. We will take every measure that benefits our public,” Singh told news agency ANI.US President Donald Trump signed the Russia sanctions bill into law, the White House said in a statement. The Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act seeks to impose steep levies on Moscow and its top energy buyers, including India and China.Singh said India does not base its decisions on the dictates of other nations and will take steps to safeguard the country’s strength and stability.“We will take decisive steps to ensure the strength and stability of our nation and its population. We maintain an independent foreign policy; we do not align ourselves based on the dictates of other nations but rather act in the best interests of our own country,” he said.

He also reiterated India’s position on the tariffs being imposed, saying, “We have consistently maintained that the tariffs being imposed are unfair, and we do not operate under pressure from any other nation.”On India’s energy needs, Singh said the government would continue to source energy based on what is commercially viable and economical.“Energy is a primary concern for us; we will source energy for our country and our people from wherever we find commercially viable and economical options,” he said.
