Vibhav Roy: OTT gives more freedom, but I’m grateful to television
Actor Vibhav Roy, known for his work in television shows including Gustakh Dil, Doli Armaano Ki, Kuch Toh Hai Tere Mere Darmiyaan, Meri Saas Bhoot Hai and Shaitani Rasmein, and others.Talking about where he feels more creatively comfortable, Roy says OTT gives him greater freedom as an actor. “Creatively, I definitely enjoy working in the OTT space more because it gives you a lot more freedom. There are fewer restrictions, and you’re able to express yourself in a more honest and original way. Television, especially on GEC channels, comes with its own set of guidelines and creative limitations, whereas OTT allows storytellers and actors to push boundaries and explore more nuanced characters.”However, he is quick to acknowledge what television has contributed to his career. “I’m extremely grateful for everything television has given me. It has played a huge role in my career,” he says.According to Roy, the long-running nature of television can sometimes become creatively repetitive. “Playing the same character over a long period — sometimes for years — can become a little repetitive as an actor. OTT, on the other hand, offers the opportunity to constantly explore new worlds and different characters, which I find creatively more stimulating and fulfilling.”At the same time, he believes television continues to have its own advantages. “Television offers stability, reaches a much wider audience, especially in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, and gives actors tremendous visibility. Financially too, it can be very rewarding,” he says. For Roy, therefore, the choice is not about dismissing one medium for another. “It’s never been about choosing one over the other. Both mediums have their own strengths, and I genuinely enjoy working in both. I’m grateful for every opportunity that comes my way.”
