As the US remains fixated on beating China in the race for advanced technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), a tech startup leader has warned that the most dangerous hazard to America’s future is taking shape within its own borders: the concentration of power among a handful of domestic companies. Addressing the debate over technological supremacy, the necessity of competitive domestic infrastructure and the growing risks of centralised digital authority, John Johnson, CEO of digital infrastructure and cloud startup Patmos, said that the US must avoid regulation or slowdowns entirely out of fear of Beijing.“I think if we can continue to compete on the infrastructure side, we’re going to be OK against China. But the real problem is not China as much as it is a centralization of technological power in the United States,” Johnson was quoted as saying.Rather than allowing frontier computing assets to pool inside an exclusive group of tech giants, Johnson argued that federal and regional priorities must shift toward dispersing digital resources across the broader American map. He stressed that physical computing infrastructure must be constructed nationwide at top speed, explicitly shifting power away from Silicon Valley hubs to places like the “Silicon Prairie” and regional communities in between.Johnson pointed out that AI holds the potential to serve as an immense financial catalyst for everyday localities, only if developers work cooperatively alongside these communities rather than running the show themselves.
The danger of ‘fake humans’ and technocratic control
The Patmos founder also delivered his sharpest critique when analysing the fundamental capabilities of modern machine learning models. While clarifying that AI lacks independent consciousness or a self-driven will, Johnson warned that its capability to impersonate human beings presents a danger. He argued that tech elites will attempt to leverage realistic human counterfeits to impose societal control, describing that ambition as their ultimate objective.“What they can do really well, which is scary, is present a counterfeit of the human person. And I think that will be what these technocrats try to use to control the world, which is really what they want to do,” Johnson said.“That’s a proposition that Americans are just not going to accept,” he said, adding that American citizens should reject any scenario where people are forced to subordinate themselves to unaccountable digital platforms. He declared that everyday Americans will refuse to accept a future dictated by runaway machine systems, urging the public to do everything within their ability to resist that path.
