KARUR: Pugazhur town secretary of TVK, A Nandakumar, was arrested on Tuesday in connection with an alleged attempt to snatch a gold thali chain from a woman near Noyyal in Karur district.Police said Nandakumar, 29, was arrested under Sections 304(2) read with 62 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), pertaining to chain-snatching.According to police, M Priya, 40, a resident of NSK Nagar on the Karur-Coimbatore Road, was travelling to her parents’ house in Varundhiyapalayam near Kodumudi in Erode district. Priya was riding her electric scooter from Karur when she was passing a private school in Vettamangalam Bhadrakaliamman Nagar near Noyyal.A man riding a motorcycle allegedly approached her from behind and attempted to snatch the gold thali chain she was wearing. Priya swerved her scooter to the left, causing the man’s hand to only graze her neck. Taking advantage of the heavy traffic on the highway, the man allegedly fled the spot on his motorcycle.Priya subsequently lodged a complaint with Velayuthampalayam police on August 15, police said. A case was registered against an unidentified person. Police examined CCTV footage from a camera near the private school and, based on the visuals, identified and arrested the TVK functionary.Further investigation is underway. Nandakumar has been remanded in judicial custody.
