Tamil Nadu Farmers’ Association demands release of water from Mettur dam into lakes in Namakkal district

NAMAKKAL: The Tamil Nadu Farmers’ Association held a protest near Anna statue in Tiruchengode on Tuesday demanding measures to improve irrigation and rural livelihoods in Namakkal district.The protesters demanded the release of surplus water from Mettur dam into the lakes in the district to improve irrigation and recharge groundwater. “Farmers have been struggling with water scarcity, and this measure is vital for their survival,” said association district secretary S Kannan.The protesters, led by association district president R Boopathi, demanded that people who had lived for decades on temple land be recognised as tenants and charged a fixed rent. They sought uninterrupted free power for agriculture and immediate electricity connections for all applicants.Other demands included house sites for applicants and permission for farmers to collect silt from lakes to improve soil fertility.The association said it would continue its protest until its demands were met.
