Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio has been handed an eight-month driving ban and a fine of around £12,350 (approx. $16,685) after being convicted of drink-driving in Spain. The 23-year-old was stopped in the early hours while driving a Porsche Macan GTS in Gran Canaria and recorded a breathalyser reading almost four times above the country’s legal limit. The conviction comes just days before Asencio is due in court over a separate case involving the alleged sharing and distribution of intimate footage involving a minor, for which he has previously denied the allegations. Real Madrid have also opened disciplinary proceedings against their academy graduate following the latest incident.
Asencio stopped at 6.30am in Gran Canaria
Asencio was stopped by police at a breathalyser checkpoint in San Bartolome de Tirajana, in the south of Gran Canaria, at around 6.30am on August 16.The Real Madrid defender had been driving a Porsche Macan GTS when officers stopped him and carried out a breath test. According to the Daily Mail, his reading came back at 0.90 milligrams of alcohol per litre of exhaled breath, while Spain’s legal drink-drive limit is 0.25 milligrams per litre.He subsequently pleaded guilty to drink-driving at a fast-track hearing three days later.The conviction, which emerged on Wednesday, resulted in an eight-month suspension of his driving licence and a financial penalty of €14,400, equivalent to around $16,685. The fine was set at €120 (approx. $139) per day over four months.The incident has now also triggered action from Real Madrid. According to journalist Melchor Ruiz, the club has opened an extraordinary disciplinary file against Asencio, meaning his conduct will now be assessed internally as well as having already resulted in a criminal conviction.Under the collective agreement between La Liga and the AFE (Association of Spanish Footballers), the incident could potentially be treated as either a serious or very serious disciplinary offence.If Real Madrid classifies it as a serious offence, Asencio could face a suspension from his salary lasting between two and 10 days. A very serious classification would carry a substantially heavier punishment, with a salary suspension of between 11 and 30 days, while a fine could reach 25 per cent of the first €100,000 of his monthly salary
A difficult period for the Real Madrid defender
The timing of the drink-driving conviction is particularly significant because Asencio is already dealing with a separate legal case that is due to reach trial on Thursday.The Real Madrid defender is facing proceedings over the alleged sharing and distribution of an intimate video involving a minor, as well as allegations that the footage was distributed without consent.Both alleged victims have since withdrawn their complaints against Asencio, which has opened the possibility of him being acquitted.However, public prosecutors are still seeking a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence if he is convicted. Prosecutors have also indicated that they will withdraw the charges against Asencio if the alleged victims confirm in court the apologies they say he offered them during the judicial investigation.Asencio has previously denied the allegations. Asencio’s former Real Madrid academy teammates Ferran Ruiz, Juan Rodriguez and Andres Garcia are also due to stand trial in connection with the 2023 incident.Ruiz, Rodriguez and Garcia were arrested in September 2023 after allegations surrounding sexual activity involving two women at the beach club. The three former Real Madrid academy players are accused of having consensual sexual relations with the two women but allegedly recording and distributing sexual videos without their consent.Asencio is not accused of being involved in that alleged incident itself.He was initially interviewed by police in connection with the investigation before subsequently becoming part of the wider case over the alleged sharing of the footage.
Real Madrid’s patience with Asencio is being tested
The legal issues come during a period in which Asencio’s position at Real Madrid has already become considerably less secure than it once appeared.The defender was previously viewed as one of the leading products of the club’s academy after breaking into the first team, but his standing has declined in recent months. He is currently out injured and, according to the report, has fallen down the pecking order to the point where he is not even considered the club’s fourth-choice central defender.His relationship with the club has also reportedly been complicated by his decision to remain at Real Madrid during the summer transfer window, despite the club’s preference for him to leave.
