Quote of the day by James Dean: ‘There is no way to be truly great in this world. We are impaled on the crook of conditioning’, when the ‘East of Eden’ actor talked about the reality of life and living in a box set up by society |
James Dean was once one of the biggest names in cinemas during his time in the 1950s. While the American actor was active for only 5 years before his untimely passing, his impact on Hollywood and cinema is remembered to date. So much so to the point that he is often mentioned in modern-day cinema and entertainment, which also includes a reference in one of Taylor Swift’s most popular songs, ‘Style.’The quote for the day by the late actor is a part of his 1955 interview with Hedda Hopper, around the same time when he had garnered a lot of love and praise for his work in ‘East of Eden.’The quote for the day reads: “There is no way to be truly great in this world. We are impaled on the crook of conditioning. A fish that is in the water has no choice that he is. Genius would have it that we swim in sand. We are fish, and we drown.”
What is the meaning of the quote from James Dean
The quote from Dean is about how many aspects of our lives often hold us captive or “on the crook of conditioning.” Things like family, society, culture, and everything in between play quite a heavy role in where, what, and who we are as people, which can often times be confining and restrictive. He conveyed that most people are living by the rules and conditioning that they have been taught through, and are not being true to themselves.Using fishing metaphors, the actor also talked about how deep this often goes, as the conditioning and rules all start from a very young age in most people’s lives. He compares it all to a fish in water, since they have no choice but to be there to survive and go forward, in a similar manner as to how we have been conditioned to stay in the same place to survive. Lastly he adds that if we try to completely reject our human nature and escape the world’s conditioning, we suffocate and “drown” in our attempts. While the quote is about accepting the reality behind how things around us often shape us and confine us to boxes, it also presents us with the possibility of understanding what will happen once we are fully aware of what is happening around us. The quote presents the question of what will happen once you regain control from these components in your life and learn to thrive in the very water you felt suffocated in.
