Chennai: A panchayat secretary and three sanitation workers have been booked after a fire from burning garbage destroyed a thatched hut in Karani village near Periyapalayam in Tiruvallur district.The complainant, Senthil, a 43-year-old daily wage labourer, lived with his wife Saritha in the thatched hut. He has two daughters and one of them, Meera, is a political functionary.Senthil told police that sanitation workers Suman, Komala and Selvi dumped garbage near his house on July 6 and set it on fire on the instructions of Koduvelli panchayat secretary Umanath. The fire reportedly spread to the hut due to winds, reducing the structure to ashes. Household articles, electrical appliances, Aadhaar cards, school certificates, ration card, cash and gold jewellery were destroyed in the blaze.Based on the complaint, Vengal police registered a case against Umanath and the three sanitation workers. An investigation is under way. The affected family has alleged that no alternative accommodation or relief has been provided to them so far.
