‘Outer Banks’ season 5 ending explained
In the previous season, JJ was stabbed by his father and died in Kiara’s arms, who continued to refuse the truth that he was gone. This incident fueled the Pogues’ wish to find the Blue Crown and to exact revenge on Chandler for everything he had done. Throughout the episodes of the final season, Kiara remains determined to find Blackbeard’s treasure, as the crown is said to have the magical ability to bring people back to life.Nearing the season finale, a hurricane forces all the main characters into the same location, resulting in the Pogues finally confronting Chandler Groff. He runs away after stealing some of the gold, while Rafe and Sofia also plan their escape.
Does JJ come back?
No, despite what the Blue Crown’s legend says, JJ is not resurrected by the end of the episode. However, the artifact grants Kiara the closure she needed. When Kiara finally gets her hands on the Blue Crown, she wishes for JJ to come back to life; however, instead of resurrecting him in the literal sense, the crown provides her with visions of their relationship, including the first time she met him when they were children. However, she does end up getting her revenge. After Chandler escapes with the gold, she strays from the group and secretly boards his boat before he leaves. After some time, she comes out of hiding and confronts him about why he killed his own son in the name of some treasure. The confrontation quickly becomes violent as Groff attacks her and tries to throw her overboard as the storm rages on around them. After a while, Kiara is able to dodge his attacks and ties him with a rope. As she cuts it off, Groff falls into the ocean with the weight of the sail beam taking him down, confirming that Kiara and the Pogues finally got their revenge for JJ’s death. However, the victory is short-lived as the boat gets damaged because of the storm and starts sinking. She sends out a distress signal before going overboard and later fires the last flare she had into the air. All hope seems lost; however, the Pogues pick up her signal and rescue her just in time. After going back to the island, the group continues their search for the Royal Merchant, eventually finding it and using it to build the lives they always wished for.
How does the show end for everyone?
John B uses his share of the gold to buy back the land he grew up on. As he rebuilds his father’s home, Sarah gives birth to their baby. The couple chooses to keep JJ’s memory alive by naming their son after their close friend. There is also a time jump that shows that John B and Sarah finally get married in the presence of their loved ones.Kiara, on the other hand, uses her share to buy back the Maybank house. She rebuilds the property and makes a garden for herself there. She also starts studying to become a marine biologist. As for Rafe and Sofia, after escaping the hurricane, the two plan to leave the country, as they are still wanted fugitives. However, before leaving, Rafe leaves a message for Sarah. He writes, “I’m sorry for everything that happened. I really am, but I don’t think I’ll be able to come back again, so I won’t see your baby. I got a second chance, and I need to make it count.” Pope and Cleo are also essentially engaged by the end of the series finale. The series ends on a happy note despite JJ’s death, with everyone moving on with their lives and working towards their dreams, while keeping his memory alive in their own way.
