Bengaluru: Nine persons, including four of a family returning from a pilgrimage to Tirupati, died in separate road accidents reported from Bengaluru and neighbouring districts starting Sunday.A Mysuru-based man, his two children and mother-in-law died on the spot after their multi-utility vehicle rammed a stone culvert on Bengaluru-Chennai expressway near Doddakari village under Bethamangala police limits in KGF taluk around 7am Monday. The deceased have been identified as Devendra, 44, children D Deeksha, 20, and D Vishnu Sai, 12, and mother-in-law Sharada Bai. Three more of the family travelling in the MUV were hospitalised with injuries.Police said the family, which came out of the temple complex around 3am, decided to immediately leave for Mysuru instead of waiting for daybreak to return home. “We suspect that driver Vikash Rao dozed off. The site of the accident is a straight road. Yet, the MUV veered to the left and rammed the culvert before entering the field by the expressway side,” a police officer said.The Chennai expressway, after it was opened to traffic in March 2025, has become a nightmare for motorists as the stretch between Kolaturu, near Hoskote, and Bethamangala has seen more than a dozen accidents and claimed 25 lives so far.Around 3am Monday, three women agricultural labourers were killed after a van carrying labourers collided with a mini-goods vehicle coming in the opposite direction near Kothanur Hosahalli Gate in Sidlaghatta taluk, Chikkaballapur. The deceased have been identified as Roopa, 25, Rathnamma, 40 and Munichowdamma, 48, all from Chintamani taluk. Ten more labourers and the van driver sustained minor injuries and were shifted to a hospital at Sidlaghatta.BOX 1Shoe ride for daughter claims dad’s lifeOn Sunday evening, Chetan Kumar, 36, a private company employee who was taking his four-year-old daughter to buy shoes for her, died on the spot after his motorbike skidded off the road near Hemmigepura main road. Kumar came under the wheels of a truck coming in the opposite direction. His daughter, riding pillion, escaped with minor injuries. “There are no potholes or unscientific speedbreakers at the place,” a police officer said.BOX 2Schoolgoing boy, 5, run overA five-year-old boy riding pillion with his mother died after he accidentally came under the wheels of a tipper truck on Uttarahalli main road Monday morning. The deceased is R Bhavin, a resident of Kommaghatta, Kengeri. His mother Subhalata Prabhu escaped with minor injuries in the accident reported around 7.45 am.“Subhalata dropped her elder daughter Bhanvi, 12, at her school and was riding towards Hosakerehalli to drop Bhavin at his school. While riding on the Kengeri-Uttarahalli main road, a speeding motorist from the opposite direction brushed against Subhalata’s gearless scooter, throwing the mother and child on the road. The tipper truck coming behind mowed Bhavin down,” a senior cop said.
