Cody Bellinger shines as American League earns another All-Star Game victory

The MLB All-Star Game has been a baseball tradition since 1933, when Chicago Tribune sports editor Arch Ward proposed a midseason exhibition featuring the sport’s top players. Over the years, the event has grown into a week-long celebration that includes the Home Run Derby, Futures Game and the All-Star Red Carpet Show. Players earn All-Star selections through a combination of fan voting, player and coach selections, and picks made by the Commissioner’s Office. Every MLB team is guaranteed at least one representative. This year’s game belonged to the American League from the opening inning. Bellinger’s two-run single helped spark a three-run first inning, while the AL pitching staff combined to allow just three hits and strike out 15 batters. Miguel Vargas added a solo homer in the eighth inning to complete the scoring. The 4-0 victory marked the first All-Star Game shutout in 13 years and earned Bellinger the Ted Williams All-Star Game MVP Award.
