Marcus Rashford makes history as first Englishman to win La Liga with FC Barcelona as they clinch title | International Sports News
FC Barcelona secured their 29th La Liga title after beating rivals Real Madrid 2-0 at a packed Spotify Camp Nou, with Marcus Rashford making history in the process. The England forward opened the scoring in the eighth minute with a stunning free-kick curled into the far corner before Ferran Torres doubled Barcelona’s lead later in the first half. The victory moved Barcelona 14 points clear at the top of La Liga with only three games remaining, while manager Hansi Flick completed back-to-back league title wins in his first two seasons in charge. It was also an emotional evening for Flick, who remained on the touchline despite the recent passing of his father. After the match, Flick made it clear Barcelona’s focus had already shifted towards another milestone. Speaking to ESPN, the German coach said: “We want to reach 100 points. It’s still possible. This is the next goal.” Only two teams in La Liga history have previously reached the 100-point mark.
Rashford achieves feat not seen since 1985
Rashford’s title win also saw him become the first English footballer in 41 years to win La Liga with Barcelona. The last player from the British Isles to win the Spanish top flight with the Catalan giants was Steve Archibald in 1985, although Archibald represented Scotland rather than England. That means Rashford becomes the first Englishman to achieve the feat since Barcelona’s rise into the modern era of European dominance. Several high-profile English players have played for Barcelona since then without managing to win La Liga. Most notably, Gary Lineker spent three seasons at the club between 1986 and 1989 but failed to lift the Spanish league title as Real Madrid dominated domestically during that period. Lineker still won silverware in Spain, collecting the Copa del Rey in 1988 and the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1989, but never managed to win La Liga. For Rashford, this title represents the first league championship of his professional career in any country. The 28-year-old has enjoyed a strong campaign in Spain since arriving on loan from Manchester United earlier this season.

Across all competitions, Rashford has registered 14 goals and 12 assists in 48 appearances, while in La Liga alone he has scored eight goals and provided seven assists. He has also already collected the Spanish Supercopa during his time in Catalonia.
Rashford hints at Barcelona stay
Following the title-clinching victory, Rashford admitted he would love to remain at Barcelona permanently beyond the end of his loan spell. Barcelona currently hold an option to make the move permanent for a reported fee of around €30 million (£35 million). When asked whether he would still be a Barcelona player next season, Marcus Rashford told reporters: “I don’t know. I am not a magician, but if I was, I would stay. We will see.” The England international added: “I came here to win. I want to win as many things as I can. This is one more to add to this. “This is a wonderful team, they’re going to win so much in the future; to be a part of that would be special.” Speaking separately to ESPN after the match, Rashford was slightly more cautious about his future, refusing to completely rule out a return to Manchester United. “This is the perfect way I want it to end,” he said. “I’m very happy, I just want to enjoy today. “I live in the moment. At the end of the season we will see. I came here to win and we do this, so I’m very happy. It’s an incredible feeling.” He also reflected on finally winning a league title for the first time in his career. “The feeling is amazing,” Rashford said. “It’s been a long season with ups and downs, but I think we deserved to win [LaLiga].”Whether Barcelona decide to activate their purchase option this summer remains uncertain, but Rashford’s impact in Spain has already placed him into a unique part of the club’s history.
