Man runs over wife for Rs 44L insurance claim | Kanpur News
KANPUR: A 40-year-old man in Hamirpur allegedly killed his 34-year-old wife by running her over with a car multiple times to claim Rs 44 lakh in life insurance. Police have arrested four people, including the woman’s husband, in connection with the case. The accused later admitted to staging the murder as a road accident and even lodging a false missing person complaint to divert suspicion. The incident took place on the night of July 29, about two kilometres ahead of Paudhiya village in the Lalpura police station area, where farmers returning after guarding their fields spotted a mutilated body lying near the truck lane. The condition of the body suggested she had been crushed by a heavy vehicle. After villagers informed police, Lalpura police reached the spot, collected forensic evidence and began the investigation.During the search, police found a bank account slip in the woman’s clothing. Based on it, the deceased was identified as Reeta, wife of Amar Singh Savita, a resident of Bamrauli village under Maudaha police station in Hamirpur. Police said Reeta’s parental home was in Rajpur, Kanpur Dehat. On a complaint by Reeta’s father, Sarvesh Kumar Gupta, police registered a murder case against unknown persons. Family members said this was Amar’s third marriage and that Reeta married him about two and a half years ago after meeting him in Kanpur, where she worked after her first husband died.ASP Arvind Kumar said Amar and his associates owed a large sum to Pushpendra Soni, alias Sahil, and creditors were pressuring them for repayment. To settle the debt and get money quickly, they allegedly planned to kill Reeta and stage it as a road accident to claim insurance. As part of the alleged conspiracy, the accused took a life insurance policy worth Rs 44 lakh in Reeta’s name. Under the arrangement, Amar was to receive Rs 20 lakh from the claim, while the remaining money was to be distributed among the accomplices.Police said Amar lured Reeta to the Paudhiya canal road on the night of July 29, where his associates waited in a car. As soon as Reeta reached the spot, they rammed her with the car, throwing her into a roadside ditch. Police said the accused then lifted her from the ditch, placed her back on the road and drove the car over her again to ensure she died on the spot and to make the case appear to be a hit-and-run.After the alleged crime, all the accused fled the scene. Police said Amar went to Sumerpur police station and reported that his wife had suddenly gone missing from home to mislead investigators. When Lalpura police received information about the body found near Paudhiya, Amar Singh went to the mortuary and identified it as Reeta while continuing to act grief-stricken before the police, according to the investigation.A joint team of Lalpura police station, the SOG and the surveillance unit was formed under the direction of Superintendent of Police Mrigank Shekhar Pathak. Police said that after examining CCTV footage around the crime scene and conducting technical analysis of call detail records, Amar’s movements appeared suspicious. Police detained and questioned him, after which he allegedly confessed and revealed the conspiracy.Police arrested Amar of Bamrauli in Maudaha, Amit Gupta alias Ram of Rajpur, Kanpur Dehat, Pushpendra Soni alias Sahil of Mahoba, and Abhay Singh alias Golu of Fatehpur. Police recovered the car allegedly used in the murder and an Airtel SIM card from the accused. All four were produced before the court and sent to jail.
