Jamshedpur: Authorities of the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital (MGMMCH) here have announced tighter hostel rules and enhanced campus surveillance after two interns drowned in Dimna lake following a late-night outing early Friday.MGMMCH principal Dr Sanjay Kumar said only eligible students would be allowed to stay in the college hostels with immediate effect. Interns occupying hostel rooms have been asked to vacate at the earliest, and the college has sought the East Singhbhum district administration’s help to remove unauthorised occupants.The administration will also regulate movement after hostel gates close. The girls’ hostel gate will shut at 7 pm and the boys’ hostel gate at 10 pm.

Students wishing to leave after these hours must submit a written request explaining the reason. “Only requests deemed genuine will be approved,” Kumar said.Students granted permission must record the purpose of their visit, destination, departure time and expected return in a register at the hostel gate.Guard rooms will be built at the entrances of both hostels, where security personnel will monitor and record the movement of individuals and vehicles. Additional CCTV cameras will be installed at hostel gates, the secondary entrance and proposed parking areas.Separate parking lots for faculty members, students and non-teaching staff will be developed and brought under CCTV coverage. Kumar said a fresh campus survey would identify more locations for cameras. The college will also examine infrastructure upgrades and technology-driven measures to strengthen security across the campus and hostels.Interns Saksham Singh, 24, and Sameer Kumar, 25, drowned after visiting the lake with batchmate Yash Kumar.Established in 1961, MGMMCH admits 150 MBBS students annually. It has a 290 hostel rooms for boys and 260 for girls. Nearly 20% of the rooms are allegedly occupied illegally by interns.The principal said the new restrictions and surveillance plan were intended to improve discipline and security in the hostels and across the wider college campus immediately.
