Gurgaon businessman’s wife arrested after video shows her assaulting domestic staffer in Camellias flat
A liquor businessman’s wife was arrested on Monday for allegedly assaulting a domestic staffer.

GURGAON: A liquor businessman’s wife was arrested on Monday for allegedly assaulting a domestic staffer last month, an incident that happened behind closed doors at an apartment in DLF The Camellias but reached the public domain after a video began circulating on social media.Taking cognisance of the video, which wasn’t CCTV footage but a clip recorded on July 24 by another worker employed at the luxury condominium on Golf Course Road, police registered an FIR and began an investigation.Shot from a balcony overlooking the kitchen of the businessman’s house, the video shows the woman shoving the domestic worker, pulling her hair and grabbing her by the neck.Based on the investigation after social media users tagged Gurgaon police and asked it to act, Ruchira Sachdeva (52), a resident of tower number 7, was arrested. The FIR, however, does not name Sachdeva. Police said the assault followed an argument between the two women over work. “The victim left the job on July 27, three days after the incident,” said Sandeep Turan, police spokesperson.The FIR was filed under sections 115(2) (voluntarily causing simple hurt) and 127(2) (wrongful confinement) of BNS. Sachdeva was released on bail.The victim, originally from Nepal, had been working at the house for over a year. Police said she refused to lodge a formal complaint. She has returned to Nepal. Her husband works as a cook in the city. Police said the circumstances leading to the incident and other aspects of the incident are being probed.Deepika Narayan Bhardwaj, who flagged the video to Gurgaon police and the one-stop centre for women, said, “It is extremely unfortunate that educated people living in upscale societies treat their domestic employees like this. The abuse is captured on camera and its intensity is condemnable. I trust police will take appropriate action for this inhuman abuse.”
