From stage to screen: Kannada actor Praveen Bengaluru on his acting journey and much more
For Kannada actor Praveen Bengaluru, popularly known as PK, the journey into acting did not begin under the glare of arc lights, but within the classrooms of his college. Today, with a steady presence across television and films and a growing aspiration to become a filmmaker, PK’s story reflects persistence, discipline, and creative evolution.
Early Aspirations Sparked in College
PK says his interest in acting began during his college years at Surana College. “I aspired to become an actor during my college days. At Surana College, a few actors were faculty members. Watching them balance academics and performance inspired me deeply,” he recalls.While he pursued business studies and languages, his inclination towards performance only grew stronger. “When I expressed my interest at home, my parents insisted I join theatre to gain exposure. That advice changed everything,” he adds.
The Theatre Foundation at Abhinaya Taranga
In 2011, PK joined Abhinaya Taranga, a move that proved pivotal in shaping his artistic journey. “My immersion in dramatic arts began there. It wasn’t just an acting course—it was a complete education in discipline, craft, and the essence of theatre,” he says.Through rigorous rehearsals, street plays, and live performances, PK developed confidence and stage presence. “The experience taught me ensemble work, script analysis, and the discipline required for long-term creative projects,” he shares.His efforts were recognised early on. “During my time at the academy, I was honoured with the ‘Best Actor’ award for that year. It was a huge encouragement at a very early stage,” he adds.
The training also pushed him beyond his comfort zone.“Once, I was asked to walk on a public road in an Aghori avatar. It was meant to break my stage fear. That exercise truly helped me come out of my shell,” he says.
A Memorable Small-Screen Debut
PK made his television debut in 2012 with Guru Raghavendra Vaibhava, an experience he describes as deeply transformative. “I was just a teenager stepping onto a professional set for the first time. Everything felt massive—the lights, the cameras, the temple sets,” he recalls. Despite having a small role, the learning was immense. “The set felt more like a pilgrimage site than a workplace. There was silence, discipline, and deep respect for the story. I learned technical skills like hitting the mark and finding the light, but more importantly, patience and sincerity,” he says.
Recognition with Jothe Jotheyalli
PK gained wider recognition with his parallel lead role in the popular Kannada television show Jothe Jotheyalli. “That project gave me visibility and helped me connect with a larger audience. It was a big step forward in my career,” he notes.
Big Screen Moments and Learning Abroad
The actor also made a cameo appearance in Uppi 2, starring Upendra. “It was a great opportunity to be part of a unique cinematic vision,” he says.Keen to expand his creative horizons, PK says he plans to travel to the United States to study filmmaking. “I want to understand cinema beyond acting, direction, storytelling, and the technical aspects. I believe that exposure will completely change my perspective,” he says.
Aspiring to Tell New Stories
With a strong foundation in theatre and acting, combined with global exposure, PK is now looking at the next phase of his journey. “I aspire to create something new and different for the Kannada entertainment industry. I want to tell stories that are rooted yet innovative,” he says.As he continues to evolve, Praveen Bengaluru’s journey stands as a testament to the power of theatre, continuous learning, and the courage to dream beyond boundaries.
