Exploring a world beyond acting: Dev Joshi focuses on international affairs
For most viewers, actor Dev Joshi will always be Baalveer. But beyond the superhero cape, the actor has been quietly nurturing another passion — international affairs.Known for shows like Chandrashekhar and Baalveer, Dev has earned a Master’s degree in International Affairs and Diplomacy and continues to stay closely connected to the field alongside his acting career.“International Affairs and Diplomacy have always genuinely interested me, which is why I pursued a Master’s degree. While life has taken me through different professional avenues, my interest in current affairs, geopolitics and policy has remained constant,” he says.He is currently associated with the Atlas Institute of International Affairs as a Political Analyst, contributing research and analytical articles. “It has been an intellectually rewarding experience because it allows me to engage with topics that shape our world and contribute to meaningful discussions beyond entertainment,” he says.Does that mean a career shift into diplomacy? Not quite. “I have always admired the profession and the responsibility it carries, and it continues to influence my work and interests today. At the same time, acting is an important part of my identity. Having spent over two decades in the industry, I feel fortunate to have grown up in front of the audience,” he says. The actor has also expanded his horizons geographically, recently establishing a base in Los Angeles while continuing to work in India. “Being in the United States has allowed me to explore opportunities in a wider entertainment market,” he shares.Whether it’s films, OTT or television, Dev says the medium is secondary. “The focus has never been on the medium itself but on the quality of the story and the character. If a role challenges me as an actor, or if I get an opportunity to contribute as a director, creative consultant or writer, I’m always excited to explore it.”While Baalveer remains synonymous with his name, he views the association as both a gift anda challenge.“Baalveer gave me immense love, recognition and a connection with audiences that I will cherish forever. When a character becomes so deeply associated with you, people naturally continue to see you through that image. Many viewers literally grew up watching me, and for them I will always be Baalveer,” he says. But he’s ready to surprise audiences. “I have evolved personally and professionally over the years, and I am excited to explore characters that are very different from what audiences have seen before. I don’t see it as an obstacle; I see it as an opportunity.”
