Class 12 results: Science pass rate jumps to 89.79%; arts, commerce dip | Guwahati News

Guwahati: Assam Class 12 board results announced Tuesday showed a five-percentage-point rise in the science pass rate, while arts and commerce recorded slight declines.Science improved from 84.88% last year to 89.79%. Commerce slipped from 82.18% in 2025 to 81.13%, and arts fell from 81.03% to 79.54%. In the vocational stream, 74.19% of students passed.The Assam State School Education Board did not release a list of rank holders. Students who passed celebrated on school campuses, distributing sweets and bursting firecrackers with teachers and friends.Arts was the top choice among girls, while most boys preferred commerce, science and vocational streams. Across all four streams, girls posted higher pass percentages than boys.The gender gap was widest in arts and vocational: 81.96% of girls passed in arts versus 76.10% of boys, and 76.74% of girls passed in vocational versus 72.42% of boys. In science, girls recorded a 90.80% pass rate compared with 89% for boys. In commerce, 82.67% of girls passed versus 80.45% of boys.More than 3.3 lakh candidates—the highest ever in the Assam state board’s Class 12 history—appeared for the examination. Officials said overall performance was satisfactory, particularly in science.CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, in a social media post, wrote: “But remember, this is just a stepping stone to a very bright and dynamic future for you all, as India and Assam offer excellent opportunities across every field for you to chase your dreams today.”Last year, pass percentages fell across all three major streams by 5%-7%, and officials and academia were closely watching this year’s results following implementation of NEP.Education minister Ranoj Pegu said overall there was a 2% increase in the pass percentage rate and credited the Mukhya Mantri Nijut Moina (MMNM) scheme, launched two years ago to promote higher education among girls and curb child marriage. Under the scheme, the state government provides monthly financial incentives to girl students from Class 11 up to the post-graduate level.Arts had the highest turnout with 2,41,124 candidates — 1,41,534 girls and 99,589 boys. Commerce had 19,469 candidates — 5,945 girls and 13,524 boys. Science had 60,667 candidates — 26,474 girls and 34,193 boys. Vocational had 602 girls and 863 boys.
