Chennai airport flags 15 foreign passport holders after ink marks raise suspicions of illegal voting in Tamil Nadu polls

CHENNAI: Immigration officials have detained at least 17 foreign passport holders, including a woman, on suspicion that they may have voted in the recently-concluded Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu using forged documents.The detained persons have been handed over to police for further questioning.Fifteen of them were intercepted at Chennai airport over the past few days while attempting to return to their respective countries, including Canada, Sri Lanka and Australia. Two others were detained at Madurai airport.The passengers were initially flagged by immigration officials during passport screening after authorities noticed indelible ink marks on their fingers. They were subsequently handed over to the respective crime branches of the Tamil Nadu Police.The Chennai Police have launched a probe into the matter. Preliminary findings suggest that two of the passengers may have cast votes in the Perambur and KK Nagar constituencies.
