Cauvery bridge on Trichy-Chennai NH closed, diversion likely to slow down vehicles | Trichy News
Trichy: The old Cauvery bridge on Trichy-Chennai national highway was closed by the NHAI to take up major maintenance work at around Rs10 crore. The bridge is likely to be closed for three months. On Thursday, Trichy city traffic police conducted a trial run of vehicular diversion and closed the bridge. They diverted vehicles heading to Chennai and northern parts of TN through the new Cauvery bridge.Barricades and ropes were installed on the new bridge to regulate movement of vehicles due to the diversion.NHAI is likely to commence the work on Friday. While residents urged NHAI to complete the work at the earliest since several people in Srirangam, Thiruvanaikoil and No. 1 tollgate areas depend on it to reach Trichy city, NHAI claimed that three months’ time is the shortest in which they could complete the work.Police said that the diversion is likely to impact the travel duration. Water flow in the river, if released from Mettur Dam to irrigate delta districts, will also be a challenging task to expedite the redevelopment work.
