A video posted on Facebook by an elderly man from Agra has gone viral, in which he and his wife allege that their son and daughter-in-law forced them out of their home in January 2022 and left them without a place to live. The man, identified as Ram Bilas Katara, has alleged he and his wife, Usha Katara, have been trying to draw attention to their situation for years. According to their claims in the viral video, they have made more than 1,000 videos since 2022 appealing for help and asking authorities to intervene. In the latest viral video, Ram Bilas Katara says that on January 4, 2022, “our son and daughter-in-law threw us out of the house”. He adds, “It’s been 5 years, there is no one to hear us.” But the case has another side, and the Agra Police say the dispute is not simply a matter of an elderly couple being evicted from their home. According to the police, the matter concerns the ownership and division of a family house and is already pending before a court.

What the elderly couple alleges

According to the couple’s account, they had an expectation that their son would support them in their old age. They allege that their son and daughter-in-law later sold the house for Rs 46 lakh and forced them out. The couple has also claimed that they spent up to Rs 75 lakh on constructing the house. In their social-media appeals, the couple says they have repeatedly asked for help since 2022. They claim to have made appeals to government authorities and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Their latest appeal again brought the dispute into public view after the video was widely shared on social media.The couple’s allegations, however, remain allegations. The ownership dispute concerning the property is before the court, and the police have said that statements given by the two sides differ.

What Agra Police said about the viral video

Following the circulation of the latest video, Agra Police responded to the matter. In a statement posted by the Police Commissionerate Agra, the police said an inquiry by Malpura Police Station found that the case relates to the ownership and partition of a family house. The police said the complainant had approached authorities with a complaint against his elder son and daughter-in-law concerning his share in the property. According to the police statement, the house is registered in the name of the daughter-in-law, while a case concerning its division is currently pending before the court.The police said that the investigation into the viral video found that the matter concerns the ownership and division of a family house. Agra Police said they were continuing to keep a watch on the matter and that further inquiry and necessary action would be taken according to the law. The police said they were keeping a close watch on the case and would carry out further investigation and take necessary action as per the rules.
