AIMPLB to launch campaign for protection Constitution and Sharia | India News
NEW DELHI: The All India Muslim Personal Law Board will launch a movement on Sept 17 to mobilise public opinion for protection of the Constitution and ‘Sharia’, religious freedom and rights and dignity of citizens. The Board plans to start the campaign from Jantar Mantar in Delhi and reach out to all faiths over three months.In a statement, the board said that as part of the campaign, a charter of demands will be submitted to the President of India Droupadi Murmu through governors in each state. Besides these issues, the charter will also include demands concerning elimination of hate crimes, prevention of unlawful demolitions, protection of Waqf properties and religious places, and equal enforcement of the law.The Board also proposes to bring out a ‘White Paper’ documenting incidents involving discrimination against Muslims, constitutional and human rights violations and release a comprehensive declaration on the issue of lynching.It said over the past several years conditions have emerged wherein vulnerable and marginalised sections, particularly Muslims, have been subjected to discriminatory treatment.

The Board listed concerns ranging from extra-legal bulldozer demolitions, attempts to undermine Muslim Personal Law through Uniform Civil Code to undermining the beliefs of the minority community by making the singing of all six verses of Vande Mataram compulsory, as serious challenges to the Constitution of India, social harmony and national unity.Meanwhile, on the controversy following Kerala’s grand mufti Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad’s comments that women should remain confined to their homes and should not enter the public sphere, arguing that Islam prescribed the purdah system to protect their dignity, AIMPLB spokesperson SQR Ilyas objected to the remarks.Noting that Islam nowhere calls for women to be kept confined to the House for their safety, Ilyas said that the interpretation made by Ahmad is “not correct” and is therefore “misplaced.”He also cited the board’s profile highlighting that there were nearly 30 women in the AIMPLB and asserted that the board was fully in support of the idea of enabling Muslim women to progress which is in keeping with the Islamic teachings.
