KOLKATA: Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo and former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday visited a hospital in Kolkata where her nephew and party national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee is undergoing treatment following an attack in Sonarpur earlier in the day.According to police, Abhishek Banerjee was allegedly roughed up by a group of locals during his visit to Sonarpur in South 24-Parganas, where he had gone to meet families affected by post-poll violence.Officials said unidentified individuals hurled stones, shoes and eggs at the TMC MP. Some protesters also allegedly attempted to physically assault him while raising slogans of “thief, thief”.Reacting strongly to the incident, Mamata Banerjee accused the BJP of being behind the attack.In a post on X, she wrote, “RULERS BECAME KILLERS – shame on you BJP.”Her remarks came shortly after videos of the incident surfaced on social media, showing protesters targeting the TMC leader during his visit.TMC leaders alleged that the protest was politically motivated and claimed that the BJP had orchestrated the attack to disrupt Banerjee’s outreach programme in the area.
