Uniform civil codes, written by states, may be rewritten by citizens
In India, the pace of legal change is generally slow. Yet, when change takes place, it is often radical, and overturns long-held assumptions. Uttarakhand’s Uniform Civil Code was one such example. Now, Gujarat state assembly too has passed a similar uniform family code. More BJP-governed states may follow suit.The question of uniform family law has long been a point of political contestation.
