In retreat, Rhine and Danube are exposing Europe’s past. But also a future where the world’s parched

Some problems are easier to understand when we see them from space, while others become clearer when we see them up close. Europe’s drying rivers are frightening from both views.

Satellites show that many European rivers have become much smaller. On the ground, people are seeing the changes too. Some are walking in places where they used to kayak. Very low water levels have even revealed old Nazi ships, a large unexploded British bomb, ancient stones called “hunger stones,” and the remains of a mammoth.

These rivers are much more important than just being places for boats and fishing. Rivers such as the Rhine, Danube, and Elbe are used to transport goods, cool factories, provide drinking water, support farming, and produce energy.

The drying rivers are also showing us something important: we cannot assume that water will always be available. Rainfall, rivers, groundwater, and fertile land can all change because of the environment and climate.

Scientists have warned that climate change could make these problems worse. Europe is not the only place facing this danger. India has serious groundwater problems too.

A 2025 study found that India is using about 61% of the groundwater that is naturally replaced by rain and other sources. However, some parts of the country are using much more than this. In some areas, groundwater use is above 70%, which is considered a dangerous level for long-term use.

Punjab is another example. Between 1998 and 2005, the average groundwater level before the monsoon fell from about 7.8 metres below the ground to about 21 metres below the ground. This means people had to go much deeper to find water.

Some people worry that solutions to water shortages will be too expensive. But waiting until cities completely run out of water could be much more costly.

For example, many Indian cities are near the sea. Cities such as Chennai are investing in desalination, which means removing salt from seawater so that it can be used as fresh water. Although this is expensive, it may be better than waiting for a serious water shortage.

We also need to think carefully before building new roads, factories, and other projects. A development project should be approved only if it does not seriously damage the local water supply.

The biggest lesson is simple: we can no longer assume that clean water will always be there. We may need to create new sources of water by cleaning sewage and wastewater, removing salt from seawater, and collecting rainwater before it disappears.

Water is not an unlimited resource. We need to protect the water nature gives us while finding new ways to save and reuse it.
