2 months pregnant UP woman assaulted by husband, in-laws; suffers miscarriage

BHADOHI: A 26-year-old woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Bhadohi has alleged that her husband and mother-in-law assaulted her while she was two months pregnant, leading to a miscarriage, and that she was later left unconscious and bleeding on a roadside.Police have registered an FIR against her husband, mother-in-law and brother-in-law.The case was registered on Wednesday at Gopiganj police station on a complaint by Sapna Saroj of Kasidaha village against her husband Rakesh Kumar Saroj, mother-in-law Rita Devi and brother-in-law Brijesh Kumar Saroj.The FIR has been registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Sections 89 (causing miscarriage without the woman’s consent), 85 (cruelty by husband or his relatives), 351(3) (criminal intimidation), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt).According to Superintendent of Police Abhinav Tyagi, Sapna and Rakesh got married in February 2017 and have a son and a daughter.“Rakesh allegedly suspected his wife’s character and had subjected her to physical and mental harassment for the past five years, including refusing to accept the two children as his own,” the officer said.“Sapna became pregnant for the third time in June, but her husband allegedly refused to accept the unborn child as his,” he said, citing the complaint.According to Sapna’s complaint, Rakesh and Rita allegedly assaulted her on the night of August 10 while she was two months pregnant.The woman alleged that she suffered serious injuries to her head, hands, legs and waist during the assault. She subsequently suffered a miscarriage and lost consciousness, police said.Police said Sapna alleged that her husband then left her unconscious and bleeding on a roadside in Gosai Bazar around 4am and fled.Passersby informed her family, following which she was taken to Bhadohi district hospital for treatment.Sapna also alleged that her brother-in-law repeatedly threatened to kill her if she approached the authorities.Superintendent of Police Tyagi said Sapna approached him with her complaint on August 11, following which the FIR was registered and necessary action was ordered.Further investigation is underway, police said.
