Our crumbling cities deserve memes & new names
When heavy rain clouds appear over Indian cities, most people don’t feel excited. Instead, they worry. Will the roads flood? Will traffic come to a standstill? Will they get to school or work? Will someone get hurt by an open manhole or a loose electric wire? Many people even ask if they can work from home because travelling becomes so difficult.
Even in these frustrating moments, people find a way to laugh. Social media fills up with funny memes and nicknames for cities that have big infrastructure problems.
For example, Gurugram is often called Jamgram because of its terrible traffic jams. Kolkata is jokingly called Jholcata. The word jhol can mean a light curry in Bengali, but it can also mean something suspicious or badly managed. Mumbai, famous for its potholes during the monsoon, gets nicknames like Potholebai or Waterway of India because its roads sometimes look like rivers.
Delhi has also started facing worse flooding during the monsoon in recent years, partly because of climate change. Traffic becomes a nightmare, and some people jokingly call Lajpat Nagar Floodpat Nagar. Later in the year, when pollution becomes very bad, Delhi gets another nickname: Smogli, because of the thick smog.
Hyderabad could even be called Hydrobad when its streets are flooded after heavy rain.
These names are funny, but they also point to a serious problem. They remind us that many Indian cities still struggle with poor roads, bad drainage, traffic jams, and pollution. The real joke isn’t the memes—it is that people have learned to expect these problems every year instead of seeing them fixed.
