Message In A Ballot

Prashant Kishor’s first election win is a big moment for his new party. The Bankipur bypoll could send an important message to Bihar’s leaders.

By-elections, or bypolls, don’t always follow a fixed pattern. But often, the party that runs the state wins these smaller elections, especially if the same party is also in power at the Centre. That’s why many people expected the BJP to win the Bankipur seat easily.

Bankipur has long been considered a BJP stronghold. Most voters there have supported the party for years. In the 2025 Assembly election, BJP leader Nitin Nabin won the seat for the fifth time in a row. He later became a Rajya Sabha MP, so a bypoll had to be held to choose a new MLA.

But the result surprised many. BJP lost the seat.

The winner was Prashant Kishor of the Jan Suraaj Party. This is an important achievement because his new party had done very poorly in the 2025 Assembly election. It contested 238 seats but won very few votes overall, and most of its candidates even lost their security deposits. Kishor himself did not contest that election.

Just nine months later, he has won a seat that many thought BJP would keep. That makes this victory a big boost for his party.

A lot had happened in Bihar before this bypoll. There were arguments over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voters’ list. After the Assembly election, BJP became much stronger than its ally JDU. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar stepped aside, and after several months BJP chose Samrat Choudhary as the new Chief Minister. Many people felt Bihar’s politics was changing.

The bypoll was also held just days after videos showed police using force against protesting students in Patna.

A single bypoll cannot predict what will happen in the next election. But this result tells BJP that even seats considered “safe” cannot be taken for granted. It also shows that Prashant Kishor’s new party may now be seen as a serious player in Bihar politics.
