Why we yell at our mums & dads, and they, at us


A few years ago, a close friend and I were out for lunch where, as usual, we traded life updates, debated our differing views on adulting, and gave our verdict on the food like professional critics. A phone call suddenly changed the pleasant atmosphere. She seemed annoyed with her mother over some errand or question, as a deep frown creased her forehead. Her tone became combative, and the words rushed out with a familiar desperation. Once the call ended, she was her usual self.
