Metamorphosis nobody expected from young cockroaches
In Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis , protagonist Gregor Samsa wakes up one morning as a cockroach. His family is horrified not by the transformation, but the prospect of his sheer unemployability. In India, cockroaches – the higher judicial term for India’s young and jobless – woke up and discovered that they had been transformed: Into people. Dissent, the right to organise, the ability to speak truth to power had, overnight, made them human. This revelation was not to themselves – they always were human to themselves – but to a higher power that had renamed them as vermin.
