Indians used to dress as dully as their sofas. But we’re all trying to get a glow-up now. Our exteriors benefit from bespoke boutiques, our interiors from matcha, moringa, flax seeds. Or so we hope

Is it my blurry vision or did the world just turn very stylish? Where are all the old men with a large paunch seemingly in search of a labour ward, and where are the old women who stock up on granny clothes because their kids hit puberty? Instead, all around are well-dressed people, aware of personal styles and ethically-sourced fabric.

India had been historically resisting global couture with great gusto, opting for bright polyesters and loud prints, citing weather conditions and bulk sales. What we wore exactly matched the curtains and cushion covers. We were largely seen slumped on brown upholstery in a brown outfit of unknown origin, so that no one knew where we ended and the sofa began. We suffered from many inherent doubts about passports, higher studies, accents, but never about what to wear. Old photos show us in a cousin’s hand-me-down, yet smiling like a Gisele Bündchen.
