An American pope has become a powerful voice against America’s wars
Pope Leo XIV has been saying one important thing again and again: God does not bless war.
That might sound simple, but many people forget it. For a long time, religious leaders, army leaders and politicians have often claimed that God supports their side in a war. They use religion to make fighting sound holy or necessary.
Pope Leo says this is dangerous. In his writing called Magnifica Humanitas, he explains that when different groups all say “God is on our side,” people stop listening to each other. Instead of walking together as human beings, they become divided.
This message is especially powerful because Leo is the first American pope. Some people think the cardinals who chose him wanted a strong religious voice to challenge American leaders who use Christianity to support war.
This problem is not only found in Christianity. Other religions and philosophies have also been used in different ways. The Bhagavad Gita inspired Gandhi to follow peace, but some people have also used it to defend violence. Zen Buddhism was once connected to Japan’s war efforts. So the problem is not religion itself, but how people twist religion to support fighting.
Today, war is even more dangerous because humans have extremely powerful weapons and technology. War can now destroy lives faster and on a much bigger scale than before. Pope Leo believes this is why people are drawn to artworks like Picasso’s Guernica and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. These works remind us of the pain caused by war and the need for peace.
Some religious leaders still describe God as a “god of war.” Pope Leo strongly disagrees with this. He believes that saying God supports one side in war only makes people more divided and violent.
In the past, people spoke about a “just war,” meaning a war that could be morally right. But Pope Leo says this idea is now outdated, because modern wars can cause terrible destruction. Humanity cannot afford to keep using religion to excuse war.
His message is simple and important: God does not take sides in war. Every human life matters. Every person carries dignity. That is the greatness of humanity: magnifica humanitas.
