A 35-year-old German amateur footballer has been arrested on suspicion of fatally poisoning his team-mate during an end-of-season trip, with prosecutors reportedly investigating whether the killing was an alleged act of revenge.The player, named as Marius, was arrested on Tuesday, September 1, after investigators came to suspect he had secretly administered poison to Philipp, 30, during a team trip to Dresden.Philipp became unwell during the trip involving players from amateur club TuS Rockenberg and grew seriously ill after returning home. His family called emergency services and he was taken to hospital, where he died the following day, June 16, 2025, despite attempts to resuscitate him.His cause of death was later established as septic multi-organ failure caused by poisoning, according to reports cited by NeedToKnow.
Prosecutor suspects ‘act of revenge’
The circumstances initially appeared less sinister.According to reports, people close to Philipp initially believed he could have suffered severe food poisoning after the team ate fish during their trip to Dresden.Investigators later reached a different conclusion and identified Marius as a suspect in Philipp’s death.Senior public prosecutor Thomas Hauburger told local media: “We assume that this was an act of revenge.”Rumours circulating in Rockenberg have reportedly suggested that the two footballers had been arguing over a woman, although that has not been established as the motive and remains part of the speculation surrounding the case.Marius is now in pre-trial detention and, according to the reports, has so far made no statement regarding the allegations.He has not been convicted of any offence in connection with Philipp’s death, and neither he nor his legal representatives had publicly responded to the allegations at the time of reporting.The arrest has left those at TuS Rockenberg shocked, particularly given the circumstances surrounding Philipp’s death.The club’s head of football, Manuel Barufe, told local media: “We are all surprised and shocked.“Nobody expected this. We hope the police can fully clarify what happened.”TuS Rockenberg later released a statement on social media following Marius’ arrest, saying the latest developments had left the club “speechless” after it had already been forced to deal with the sudden death of a team-mate the previous year.The club said: “After having to cope with the sudden death of a teammate in our football department last year, the events of last Tuesday have once again left us speechless.“None of us can currently comprehend this latest devastating blow. We are now placing our hopes in the work of the authorities and trust that the incident will be fully investigated.“Given the extremely distressing and emotional situation for everyone involved at our club, we will not comment on the ongoing investigation. We therefore urgently and respectfully ask that players, coaches and board members are not approached for comment.“Thank you for your understanding.”

Following Philipp’s death last year, TuS Rockenberg paid tribute to him, describing him as “a friend, a fighter on the pitch and a man with a big heart”.His family also remembered him for his personality, describing him as “the loud laughter, the quiet gestures and the big heart”.The latest development has come at a particularly striking point in Marius’ personal life.According to reports, the accused footballer had already married in a civil ceremony after the alleged poisoning, but a much larger wedding celebration was due to take place this month, meaning his arrest came only around two weeks before the planned celebration.Marius remains in detention while the investigation into Philipp’s death continues.The allegations against him remain unproven, with authorities yet to establish publicly whether the suspected poisoning was carried out as revenge or what precisely investigators believe happened during the team trip to Dresden.
