FIROZABAD: Two alleged robbers carrying cash rewards on their heads were killed in an encounter with a joint team of the Etawah Special Operations Group (SOG) and Firozabad police on Friday afternoon, while two policemen sustained bullet injuries, one is in critical condition, officials said.The encounter took place near Neem Kharia village under the Shikohabad police station limits after the accused, who were wanted in a chain-snatching case reported in Etawah earlier this month, allegedly opened fire on the police team.According to Agra Additional Director General of Police S K Bhagat, the Etawah SOG and surveillance unit had received information that the two accused were travelling from Ghaziabad to Jharkhand aboard the Sambalpur Express.Acting on the tip-off, a joint team of the Etawah and Firozabad police launched a search operation after the train arrived at Shikohabad railway station.As police moved in, the suspects allegedly jumped off the train and fled towards a nearby village.During the chase, they reportedly took a child hostage in an attempt to escape but later abandoned the child and sped away on a motorcycle.Police said the accused opened fire when they were cornered, injuring SOG constables David Chauhan and Pushpendra.While Chauhan sustained a bullet injury in the abdomen and was referred to Agra in a critical condition, Pushpendra suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder.Additional forces later cordoned off the area, following which both accused were killed in a subsequent exchange of fire.The deceased were identified as Sumit, 25, and Ankit, 26.Police said both had criminal records and cash rewards had been announced for their arrest.Senior police officers, including Etawah SSP Brijesh Kumar Srivastava, Firozabad SSP Aditya Langhe, Agra ADG S K Bhagat and Agra IG Deepak Kumar, visited the spot.Further investigation is underway.(With PTI inputs)
