Women’s Day and the promise of true equality

Every year on March 8, the world celebrates International Women’s Day by recognising the achievements, resilience and contributions of women in every sphere of life. From managing homes to leading organisations, from classrooms to public life, women continue to shape societies with strength and determination. Their progress and empowerment deserve appreciation and support.

This year’s theme, “Give to Gain,” highlights an important truth: when society invests in women through opportunities, education and respect, everyone benefits. Empowering women strengthens families, communities and nations.

However, if the goal of this day is equality, it must also encourage honest conversations about balance and fairness in our society.

For decades, global discourse has rightly focused on women’s rights and empowerment. But true equality cannot be selective. A society committed to justice must recognise that challenges and vulnerabilities are not limited to one gender. Many men, too, struggle silently with social expectations, emotional pressures and situations where their voices remain unheard.

Real progress lies not in creating divisions between men and women, but in building a framework of gender-neutral justice where dignity, fairness and legal protection are available to everyone. When empathy becomes universal rather than selective, society moves closer to genuine equality.

International Women’s Day should therefore be more than a celebration. It should also be a moment to reflect on how we can build a more balanced and compassionate society one where women continue to rise, and men are not left unheard.

Empowerment should unite, not divide. Because a truly progressive society is one where equality is not measured by gender, but by justice, mutual respect and shared humanity.
