Ranchi Police Traffic Personnel Trained in First Aid and CPR to Save Accident Victims

Ranchi: The traffic wing of Ranchi Police has begun imparting training to its personnel in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to save the lives of accident victims, SP (Traffic) Rakesh Singh said.On Thursday, a special training session on first aid, CPR and basic life saving methods was organised for 50 traffic department personnel.Personnel practised CPR through live demonstration in the exercise. Various methods, like stopping bleeding of victims, were also discussed.The SP (Traffic) said, “Police are generally the first responders in cases of accidents. Hence, they are being skilled in first aid. The Thursday’s programme is the beginning. More sessions would follow.”Dr Ajit Kumar said, “If the bleeding point of an accident victim is bandaged and he or she is brought to hospital quickly, the chances of survival are high. In cases of the heart stopping functioning due to shock received during the accident, CPR is important.”Last year, 557 people were killed, 458 were grievously injured and 81 sustained minor injuries in road accidents in Ranchi district. The higher number of deaths than injuries has been a matter of concern for the road safety officials, as they said that delay in getting treatment is a major cause of the situation.
