Hydro-cleaning work of Mahabodhi temple starts
A spiritually uplifting ceremony marked the commencement of hydro-cleaning at Bodh Gaya’s Mahabodhi Mahavihara, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Thai volunteers are undertaking this service, with the Archaeological Survey of India overseeing the meticulous process to preserve the ancient structure’s sanctity and heritage. This initiative follows a significant gold donation from Thailand.

Gaya: The hydro-cleaning work of the Unesco world heritage Mahabodhi Mahavihara, Bodh Gaya, started on Tuesday amid prayers and blessings offered by venerable monks in a spiritually uplifting ceremony.The hydro-cleaning initiative is being undertaken by the volunteer group “Chobtham” from Thailand as a gesture of devotion and service.Bodh Gaya Temple Management Committee (BTMC) member secretary Mahashweta Maharathi, who attended the prayer session on Tuesday, said: “The work has started in coordination with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) for proper assessment and monitoring arrangements”.“The work is being carried out with utmost care and in strict adherence to established conservation guidelines to preserve the sanctity, structural integrity, and heritage value of the Mahavihara. A representative of ASI will remain present during erection of bamboo scaffolding and throughout the cleaning process to ensure full compliance with conservation norms and safety protocols,” Maharathi said.Notably, the royal family of Thailand and other Thai devotees have donated around 432.049 kg gold for the Mahavihara as a mark of devotion. The spire of shrine structure has been covered with thin gold sheets.
