PANAJI: A 23-year-old girl lost her life, and her colleague, a 26-year-old male, was seriously injured at Dona Paula after a two-wheeler on which both were travelling was hit by a brand-new Mini Cooper driven by the son of a businessman.The impact of the accident was so hard that the airbag of the Mini Cooper opened, and the two-wheeler went and stopped over 50 metres from the spot where it was hit. The Mini Cooper was temporarily registered as it was newly purchased.Even the ribbon tied on the door handle was not removed. The bonnet of the Mini Cooper, headlamp, bumper and front glass were completely damaged in the accident.A 22-year-old student and son of Andrew Dias, Darius Myles Dias, was arrested in the accident case, PI Panaji Vijaykumar Chodankar said. Darius was in the car at the time of the accident. The incident took place on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday.Dias, in his brand-new Mini Cooper, which was proceeding from Dona Paula towards Bambolim, hit a two-wheeler from behind when the employee of the Taj Convention Centre crossed the road to proceed towards Bambolim.A 23-year-old Diksha Gopal Parwadkar, a native of Karnataka, was working as an apprentice and a 26-year-old D Arunkumar, resident of Margao. Both were on their way home after work when the tragic accident took place. Both work at the front office of Taj Convention Centre, Chodankar said.After the accident, both were shifted to Hospital for treatment, where Diksha breathed her last, whereas Arunkumar is undergoing treatment at the hospital.An eyewitness said that a speeding car approached the Taj Convention Centre junction from where a two-wheeler was crossing the road, and both the rider and pillion rider were flung into the air and fell on the road.Chodankar said that Panaji police registered the first information report under Section 106 of BNS (causing death by negligence). Chodankar said that the preliminary alcohol test on Darius was negative, but blood samples have been collected and sent for medical tests to find out whether he was under the influence of alcohol. “The blood test result is awaited,” Chodankar said.A local demanded that the govt should put speed breakers at the spot as it becomes a racing track for youth between Dona Paula and Bambolim.
