UP police arrest highway robbery gang member from lodge in Kochi

KOCHI: Police nabbed an Uttar Pradesh (UP) native, allegedly part of a highway robbery gang, from a lodge on Chittoor Road on Friday.Police sources said the accused, identified as Rizakath, was wanted in a case for allegedly robbing Rs 85 lakh from a bike rider, a collection agent, in Uttar Pradesh. A special investigation team from UP nabbed him with the help of Ernakulam Central police. Police said the case pertains to a robbery that took place on Dec 15 on the Delhi-Lucknow highway. The gang followed the man in a car and on a bike. The accused allegedly hit the man’s bike with his two-wheeler, causing it to overturn. The gang then escaped with the bag of money. Police sources said the UP investigation team focusing on CCTV footage and mobile tower locations found that Rizakath fled to Kerala. Further investigation revealed that he was in Kochi, and they contacted the officers at Central Police station. Subsequently, with the help of Central Police, he was taken into custody from the lodge. As much as Rs 10,000 have been reportedly recovered from him, said an officer. UP police had released the CCTV images of the robbery gang and had announced a reward for information about them. Sources said five others have already been arrested in connection with the case. A senior officer with Central Police said the accused was nabbed in the morning. The UP police team obtained a transit warrant later in the day from a court in Ernakulam and took the accused back to UP, said the officer.
