Contract Extension: Jalen Brunson’s $113M sacrifice sets stage for $418M blockbuster contract in 2029 | NBA News
New York Knicks’ superstar, Jalen Brunson, surely turned some heads around when he sacrificed $113 million in 2024 by signing a four-year, $156.5 million contract extension. This was seen as a sign of loyalty by the All-NBA guard as Brunson, instead of taking a bigger chunk in guaranteed earnings, provided the Knicks with a strategic financial pivot. This team-friendly deal gave the Knicks the needed salary cap flexibility for building a championship-caliber roster by acquiring high-impact players like Karl-Anthony Towns and retaining Mikal Bridges. The extension became active this season, and under it, Jalen Brunson is set to earn $34 million this season, while Karl-Anthony Towns will earn $53 million.
Jalen Brunson’s financial gamble reaps higher future payouts
As per Spotrac, Jalen Brunson’s 2024 contract extension earns him a guaranteed $156,549,124 with an average annual salary of $39.1 million. If he had waited for one more year and signed the contract in 2025, Brunson would have been awarded a $269 million maximum contract. Brunson, when asked about the $113 cost cutting deal, told Vanity Fair, “If I’m thinking about playing well to make sure I get paid, that could mess with me. I play best when I have a free mind, and that did that for me. A lot of people say I sacrificed for the team. One hundred percent, I sacrificed for the team. But most importantly, I made sure my family and I are taken care of. … Obviously, we’d love for them to do right by me. I think anyone would. I feel like I sacrificed.”While it seems a purely altruistic gesture, it is a well-calculated bet on his career and Knicks’ success. By locking in $156.5 million in 2024, Brunson not only secured an impressive deal but also positioned himself for a massive contract down the road. The current deal includes a player option for the 2028-29 season, and if he opts out in 2028, he’ll become eligible for a four-year, $323 million extension. But if he waits until 2029, he could command a staggering $418 million extension.
Jalen Brunson will have to navigate the aging curve
With all its glories and silver linings, the 2028 and 2029 negotiation windows will present a unique risk for the Knicks’ superstar as he’ll be hitting the boundaries of middle 30s. Standing at 6’2″, Brunson relies heavily on elite footwork and physical drives. He is currently averaging 27.0 points, 6.1 assists, and 3.3 rebounds while shooting at an impressive efficiency of 47.0% from the floor and 37.4% from the arc. The league is expanding at a fast pace, and the young talents are registering performances with supreme athleticism and agility. Even though he’s registering some dominant performances on the hardwood, sustaining those numbers into his mid-30s is a rare feat. By 2029, the Knicks will also face the dilemma of whether they are willing to pay over $80 million annually to a 32-year-old guard or not. For now, Brunson’s sacrifice has kept the team under the luxury tax, proving that winning in the present is worth more than the estimated nine-figure hit.
