Goat sacrifice ritual called off in Goregaon society after clash ahead of Eid al-Adha

MUMBAI: Ahead of Eid-ul-Adha celebrations, Mumbai Police on Wednesday confirmed that the ritual of goat sacrifice (Qurbani) at a housing society in Goregaon has been cancelled following a clash between two communities over the issue.Officials said the livestock will be removed from the society premises on Thursday morning to maintain law and order in the area.According to news agency ANI, tension prevailed at Satellite Gardens Phase 2 in the Gokuldham area as members of two communities confronted each other over the Qurbani ritual, with residents raising strong objections to the practice within the residential complex.Representing the Muslim side, residents claimed they had obtained permission from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to perform Qurbani in the society. They said the ritual had been a long-standing practice for years, but it had not been carried out at the site for the past two seasons. The opposing side argued that designated facilities for Bakra Qurbani should be used and raised concerns over hygiene and potential public health risks within the society, saying it could lead to the spread of diseases.(With agency inputs)
