One of the mysterious places in the world is the Bermuda Triangle, a triangular-shaped area located in the Atlantic Ocean, which is often associated with ship and airplane disappearances. The reported disappearance of ships and planes has been the subject of various studies in an attempt to unravel the mysteries behind their occurrences through natural and supernatural explanations. In relation to this phenomenon, some studies have analysed the environmental factors that exist in the said area, particularly the complex weather systems and strong ocean currents that may pose difficulties in navigating within the triangle. While many of these incidents have been documented, experts say similar disappearance rates can also be found in other heavily travelled ocean regions.Despite this, the Bermuda Triangle continues to attract attention because of its unusual public image. Some theories suggest everything from magnetic anomalies to alien involvement, although scientists have consistently dismissed these ideas. Instead, they point to more natural explanations involving weather instability and human error.

Why is Bermuda itself scientifically unusual

One of the fascinating scientific issues concerns not only disappearances but also the existence of the island of Bermuda. Geological theories claim that the volcanic islands eventually go below the sea level after the volcanic activity stops because of natural processes. Nonetheless, the volcanic activity of Bermuda stopped approximately 30 million years ago; however, it remains above the sea level.This issue has been intriguing many geologists for several decades already. In accordance with the geological theories, Bermuda had to gradually submerge into the water, which did not happen.

What scientists believe is beneath the ocean floor

Scientists William Frazer and Jeffrey Park have been investigating the region’s seismology for more than two decades. According to the conclusions provided in Geophysical Research Letters, an extensive layer of igneous rocks sits beneath the islands of Bermuda, as reported in the study published in Advancing Earth and Space Sciences, titled, ‘Thick Underplating and Buoyancy of the Bermuda Swell’.The researchers believe this layer is approximately 20 kilometers thick and composed of relatively less dense material when compared to the surrounding mantle. The density differences between the layers are responsible for the island staying afloat above the ocean waters. In other words, Bermuda could be resting atop a geological “scaffold.” As scientists conclude, this particular formation does not correspond with the classical theory of mantle plume, the process through which volcanic islands are formed. This indicates additional processes taking place deep inside our planet that require further research.

Rogue waves and the ocean explanation for missing ships

Although geology may account for the stability of the island, perhaps it is the state of the ocean that is behind the disappearances. In the Channel 5 documentary, The Bermuda Triangle Enigma, oceanographer Simon Boxall believes rogue waves may have played a role.A rogue wave is an unusual wave of massive proportions that occurs without prior indication. These waves are strong enough to capsize even big vessels and cause severe destruction. As stated by Boxall, the area of the Bermuda Triangle is exposed to storm systems approaching from all directions, including north, south, and Florida. Such weather system convergence results in an unstable sea environment and possibly hazardous wave formations.
