Coimbatore corporation awaiting approval to establish food court on DB Road

COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation has submitted a request for proposal (RfP) for establishing a food court on the DB Road in RS Puram, under the public-private partnership (PPP) mode. The project, estimated at Rs 6.5 crore, is awaiting approval of the Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA).In the current financial year’s budget, the corporation allocated Rs 5.50 crore for this project.According to a corporation official, the project is designed as a revenue-generating model. The food court is planned on approximately 60 cents of land adjacent to the multi-level car parking (MLCP). The official said, “As many as 200 people can be accommodated at a time, with provisions for at least 10 shops. The PPP mode is similar to the one established in Kathipara in Chennai. At present, the RfP is only for the ground-level court. In future, it can be extended to additional floors. This will be a dual benefit for the food court as well as the MLCP. The MLCP is often not full, so visitors can park their vehicles in it rather than opting to park outside or along the road. The official said the corporation had roped in a private consultancy to conduct a financial analysis. Based on their report, the RfP was prepared and submitted to the state.
